What is a web browser?

To surf in the web, you need a web browser.

The web browser is a software application which demands a webpage.

When you typed your URL into the address field of your browser, it starts demanding the page you have asked for.

But, what happened in the background?

  1. The name will be translated into an IP-address.
  2. The server which is behind of that address receives that demand and answers with a package of HTML code.
  3. The web browser receives that package and renders that HTML code into a readable webpage.

A few protocols ensures that it all works such as TCP/IP and HTTP or HTTPS.

The major web browsers are Windows Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome

They mainly differ in the speed, extensibility and readability at mobile devices.
