French text of upholstery course is done

I just finished revising and structuring the French text of the upholstery course. Just like the craft itself, describing and structuring activities logically, so people can understand it, is really difficult. I had to have the videos I made next to me in the end, because otherwise important details and necessary steps can get lost in the description.

I will look through the French version again with Catherine, who participated in the course, to make sure that everything is correct.

Finished the sewing course

We finished the course How to sew a skirt? this week. That means I have translated the course into English and French (as it was done in German).

It is not an easy thing to do to translate rarely used technical and specific terms into a foreign language. I am sure you know that, when preparing and writing your courses.

Please have a look at whatever version suits you best and review the course, so that I/we know if things need to be described differently.

As was decided in the last project meeting, I have published the additional interview conducted at the end of the course realisation in the learners corner.

While doing the course and translating it, I started sewing myself, and have big projects (for a beginner) ahead of me. Smiling

I started with a simple table cloth, will continue to do another one, a simple top in silk (not easy to sew!) and the final big project is sewing a beautiful blue skirt.

Now I will continue working on the French version of the upholstery course, that we did a week ago.

Meeting with Eric for Upholstery Course

Today we had a meeting with Eric, an upholsterer, who will participate in the course of "How to upholster a chair".

It was the first time that we met, and also the first time that Eric heard about something like the concept of doing2learn.

Christine explained the idea behind doing2learn and why we wanted Eric to participate and to show the "world" of how things are done. I added my two cents by explaining the "How to sew a skirt" course and its structure. As usual, we encountered barriers from Eric's side. There are always three recurring reasons for why not to do the course.

  1. It is too complicated of a subject to explain in easy and simple steps.
  2. If I show the whole world, then everyone can just copy me.
  3. No one is interested in what I can do.

People with this fascinating, traditional knowledge and knowing these manual skills often undervalue themselves and what they can do.

There are always two sides of how one can look at projects like these: one being enumerating all the barriers and ending up trying to maintain what they built over the past 20 years. The other side could be, to actually reflect, take it all in and change the nature of "doing business" and getting people involved and interested into what you are doing.

In its French tradition, we discussed and discussed and convinced Eric to do the course with us. Luckily we had his sister and brother-in-law with us, that already captured the idea of this project beforehand and illustrated new opportunities for Eric. It was easier, because he knows and trusts them, to get him motivated.

So now, they have left, they will prepare a course structure, and tomorrow, we'll start by writing it online. (well Eric will) Smiling

Finished Sewing course in German and English

Last week I went to Germany to do and finish the "How to sew a skirt course".

It is done now in German and English. Only the French translation is missing.

I appreciate this course and imagined myself a complete amateur, having heard nothing whatsoever about sewing and asked questions over questions to get simple answers and explanations. I hope it shows (especially in the videos). At the end of the course I dreamed about sewing machines and needles and fabric Smiling

Though it was difficult to work together with a 79 year-old, wanting to do it himself, because he still can, I enjoyed stretching my patience throughout the day to repeatedly teach him how to upload photos and where he can edit his text. At the end, it took much less time and I merely had to confirmatively say yes "click here".

Soon I will be starting to sew my own skirt, but in baby steps Smiling

Some photos here.

Sewing course

On Saturday I will go to Leipzig (Germany) to finish the How to sew a skirt course.

That is why, I bought the material for this course yesterday. I am getting excited about learning how to do all this, as afterwards, I want to sew another skirt based on this tutorial. Smiling

Photo group on Flickr

As there might be other who have an account on Flickr, I have created a flickr group for all photos to be collected from this project. The first one is already there. Feel free to add to the group.

Here is the link to the group.
